Veneers
Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are an incredibly popular method for addressing imperfections with your teeth. Whether you’re worried about a gap or have stains from too much coffee, veneers can restore your smile’s natural radiance.
Since they’re such an appealing aesthetic technique, we find that many of our Hampden patients have lots of questions about how veneers work. That’s why we’ve published this short guide to help you get an idea of whether veneers are the right option for you.
What are Veneers?
Veneers are very thin shells of porcelain or ceramic that we apply directly to the front and back of your tooth. They don’t provide any structural support, and we mainly use them for cosmetic applications.
One advantage of veneers over other cosmetic tooth whitening techniques is that because the veneer is so thin, the natural tone of your teeth will still come through, providing a natural effect. Veneers are also resistant to staining and durable enough to last decades if you take care of them properly.
Our Veneer Process
When you come to us for veneers in Hampden, we’ll start with a thorough assessment of your needs and expectations. Many people have incredibly high expectations that only result in disappointment. We make sure that you have realistic expectations and that you’ll be 100% satisfied with the final result.
Once we’re satisfied that veneers are the right choice for you, we’ll schedule a second appointment. This appointment will help us prepare for the veneers by removing a tiny amount of tooth enamel and taking a mold of your teeth to send away to the lab that will manufacture your custom veneers.
The third appointment is the one where the magic happens. We’ll first attach the veneer with a water and glycerine solution to make sure it fits and the color matches. We can still do a lot to adjust the color with the cement we use to bond the veneers to your teeth.
Once we’ve cleaned your teeth, we’ll apply the veneers using specialized dental cement. Once we’re satisfied with the veneer’s placement, we’ll secure the bond using a visible light beam. The entire process takes between one and two hours to complete.
We’ll schedule a follow-up visit in two weeks, where we evaluate the success of the procedure. You don’t need to do anything special at this time, just floss and brush daily.
Veneer Maintenance
Many people think their veneers are delicate due to their thinness. Most veneers are robust and can handle regular brushing and flossing, though we do recommend using a non-abrasive toothpaste to keep your veneers looking like new.
Some patients report increased sensitivity to hot and cold, but this usually goes away within a week or two after placement. If it doesn’t, please get in touch. We also provide tooth guards for people who grind their teeth while sleeping to minimize veneer wear and tear.
